Theme: Mother's Love

These stories are similar and different in some ways. The similarities between the two stories are the mothers in both of the stories are teenagers. They are young but yet they've done something shameful. The differences of the stories can be diagnosed on how mother's love is perceived.
Ah Nya, a Chinese girl aborted her baby before it was born. She was determined even though her family have talked to her and accepted the baby. However, she was still with her stand for aborting the baby. Lakshmi in The Merry Maid left her baby in front of Jamal's house which she thought that he is an Indian man. She did so as she knew her baby would have a bright future with the family. Lakshmi did not tell her family about the baby and she ran away from them to 'save' her baby. we can see that both of them love their babies but they took different action to 'save' the baby.
Lakshmi wanted her baby to live. that's why she left the baby in front of Jamal's house. Because her family did not know about the baby, she was free from the society's perception towards her and her baby. She was educated and she thinks before she acts. She knew that she has done something wrong but she did not want to make another mistake by killing the baby. She did not feel much pressure compared to Ah Nya. Ah Nya's family knew about the baby and they accepted it but Ah Nya herself was afraid to face the society. So, the best way for her is to abort the baby. She would not let her baby to face the shame from the societ.
From the two stories, Lakshmi's baby was luckier as she got the love from the adopted family as well as the biological mother. However, Ah Nya's baby was very unfortunate as it died before it could have its own life. Ah Nya perhaps showed her love by not letting others to put on the shame to her child.
